BILOXI, Miss. – A portion of an oyster reef in Pass Christian will open Thursday, Feb. 9, for tonging, officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Wednesday.


Conditionally Approved Area II “F” will open at legal sunrise Thursday. It is part of the Pass Christian Reef and is known as the “Tonging Box.”

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will meet October 17-20, 2016, at the IP Casino Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi. The meeting will convene Monday morning at 8:30. 2016-2017 MS Oyster Season Set to Open Oct 3

The state Commission on Marine Resources voted unanimously Tuesday to open oyster season beginning at legal sunrise Monday, Oct. 3. The reefs in the western portion of the Mississippi Sound will be open to tonging and dredging. The daily sack limit is 25 for dredgers and 15 for tongers. MDMR scientists estimate nearly 80,000 sacks of oysters survived a series of mortality events in August in the western Sound. The inshore Louisiana fall white shrimp season opening date was set on August the 4th at the LDWFC meeting. The opening dates have been set as follows: On August 15, 2016 at 6 pm the eastern zones 1 & 2 will open for shrimping in Louisiana territorial waters. On August 22 at 6 am the western zone 3 will open for shrimping in Louisiana territorial waters. The Mississippi commercial season for red drum will close temporarily on Monday, June 18, 2016 at 11:59 pm as a 20,000 lb portion of the commercial quota has been reached.The season is scheduled to reopen for the commercial harvest of red drum on Thursday, September 1. 2016 at 12:01 am. MSCFU Parters with Audubon G.U.L.F. To Promote Sustainable Fisheries

The Mississippi Commercial Fishermen Union recently partnered with Audubon Nature Institute's Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.) to promote sustainable fishing practices throughout the commercial fishery. Specifically, both parties recently signed a Letter of Participation for a Shrimp Marine Advancement Plan that sets goals for the Mississippi shrimp industry to advance the sustainability discussion.
